A truly fantastic car, which is by far the best example we have seen.
Representing great value when compared to the Ford Escort’s, to which the Chevette took the fight within the rally world, with great success.
History
The Chevette 2300 was designed to go rallying, not only that, but it was designed to take the fight to Ford who had great success with the Ford Escort.
Not only did the Chevette have great success but it also became quite an icon.
The road cars wore a tartan interior, with striking red trims/decals on the exterior, along with a deep chin spoiler, alloy wheels, 135bhp 16v 2.3L engine, a Getrag gearbox plus much more….
Having previously been in Ireland for the majority of its life, and having been supplied new by Chesney’s of Portglenone Co Antrim Vauxhall Main dealer, the history file contains various NI MOT certificates, SI Sorn acknowledgements, a brochure, supplement manual, a picture of the car pre restoration & so on…
This car is a well known car within the community with some people suggesting it may be the best in the country.
Body & Paintwork
Having been fully restored a number of years ago, this example presents beautifully throughout.
All panels are arrow straight, and the car has zero corrosion.
The red trims & decals are all in good order, as is all the glass – which is correct fitment with a green tint screen.
The restoration was carried out in 2004 / 2005 by a well known & respected enthusiast/builder of these vehicles, it was clearly to a very high standard, as it has really stood the test of time, still presenting as well as it does. The underside is as good as the top side. Indeed we have not seen a better example.
All trims, badges & lights are in good order as you would expect for a well loved example.
Really should be seen to be appreciated.
Interior & Trim
Who would of known that Silver bodywork and Tartan seats would look so good!
The interior of this example, really is in superb order throughout.
The usual ‘troublesome’ areas are all very good & the tartan seats are superb.
The carpet is again, in very good condition, as are the trims, switches & gauges.
The boot carpet is also in good condition, as are the ‘floor boards’.
A fantastic place to be, in remarkable condition.
Engine
Being the ideal size for a rally car, along with being a rear-drive layout, the Chevette was ideal for the purpose.
To power the car, the slant-four 2.3-litre engine was fitted, which was previously only found in the larger models, complete with a new 16-valve head.
As you can see from the pictures, this example has a beautiful engine bay, with the engine also having had an overhaul as part of the restoration.
Also the car has been fitted with the Dellorto sidedraft carbs, the original Stromberg carbs are known to ‘strangle’ the 2300 a little.
Power was a claimed 135bhp for the HS, but with the Dellorto carbs it is likely more akin to the HSR near 150bhp.
The engine runs very well, a usual little splutter or two on start up as you would fully expect with siderafts fitted, after a few seconds the car is running & idling fantastic.
The car revs freely, with great driveability & acceleration through the rev range.
Any inspection is welcome, the car really does present as well as the pictures suggest.
Running Gear
All running gear is in great order, as is the underside of the car itself – presents just as well as the rest of the car.
The Bilstein suspension still looks new, the period correct Michelin MXV tyres are like new – the car has only done dry miles since the full rebuild.
A true pleasure to drive.
